The LHC to Shut Down... Again?

Posted March 11, 2010 7:48 AM

From Discovery News - Top Stories:

The epic start-up drama surrounding the world's most powerful particle accelerator just took another painful twist. Due to unforeseeable mistakes during construction, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will need to be shut down, for up to a year, starting at the end of 2011.

2 1/2 years between shutdowns for major maintenance, nothing abnormal here. Major capital equipment like draglines get shut down every 2 1/2 to 3 years so they can last up to 50 years.

True, but don't they have to put in a few years worth of near non stop run time and work first before they get taken apart and rebuilt?

This is a unique research instrument that is only based on previous configurations. This is a new machine. So when they succeed at producing collisions at energy level A, they break out the champagne because first light or in this case first collisions have occurred. They may then ramp up the energies to level B, C or D in a preliminary shakedown cruise but they don't try to slam it to the peak design goals immediately. How often have we all found that the simple theory model is not how a new machine precisely works because the theoretical model assumed some simplifications that normally can be ignored. These guys are by design going to push the envelope. Finding out what and how things got strained at lower energy levels is just the prudent thing to do.

Extra Extra read all about it!

Journalist's paycheck pay withheld until an honest lead written.

Journalist claims innocence and blames editor.

Editor blames publisher's desire for shock.

Only the honest people have had their reputations tarnished.

Extra Extra.

We know we are not only the first to report the news. How do we know this.....because we actually make up the news
