Where Do You Buy Car Parts On-Line?

Posted March 30, 2010 12:01 AM by CarDomain

I like to ask this question every so often because I'm always looking for new sources. Lately, I've been geeking out a lot on Amazon.com's parts site. People generally don't think of going to a book site for car stuff - and the parts department is very much buried on the the Amazon homepage.

Both of these factors may be playing a role in keeping the prices reasonable. Amazon's year/make/model search is extremely good, and while a lot of the common parts come directly from Amazon, the site also features a marketplace format. So, you can pretty easily dig up all kinds of obscure and random stuff from out-of-the-way sellers.

Plus, I've been extra-obsessed with Amazon ever since I figured out I could spend my reward certificates there (the ones I get from my credit card). Free car parts - it just doesn't get much better than that.

So where do you buy car parts on-line?

For the past 2 years I have been buying automotive parts from a place called rockauto.com They feature many OEM parts at prices way below most brick and mortar parts places. I just ordered a fuel pump for my brothers 1998 GMC Jimmy. It was an original AC Delco unit, and cost approx $350.00 less than the same part from the local GMC dealer. If you have the time to wait because of shipping, this place is hard to beat. Actually, we paid a few dollars extra and received the pump in 2 business days in perfect condition because of their superior packaging. Rock Auto has parts for all makes and models, and very friendly and helpful customer service people.

There is another good place to buy auto parts: autoparts123.com. It is cheap; the site is easy to navigate. I cannot compare it to amazon.com for I've never bought parts from them, but comparing with other auto-parts sites, it is way cheaper.

Try J.C. Whitney's website. I've used them in the past several times and never had a problem with parts availability, quality or shipping times.

I've bought air filters and other smaller OEM parts from this site when i've done things myself... I've also used them to figure out how much the garage is marking up larger parts on me when I'm not doing things myself...

The answer depends on whether you are seeking parts for an American or a foreign car. Rockauto.com has a wide selection of parts for American cars and an excellent database but their low prices are deceptive because they charge exceptionally high shipping fees. Calculate the total cost including shipping fees from several vendors before purchasing. All of my cars are Hondas and I have found the following retailers offer competitive prices and reasonable fees: autohausaz.com,partsgeek.com and europartsdirect.com. But only purchase OEM/OES parts; the quality of aftermarket parts is often very low.
