Goldilocks and the Three Displays?

Posted April 03, 2010 8:21 AM

I saw an IMAX movie on a screen so big I could see it peripherally and I developed a crick in my neck. Later I navigated my small cellphone display which is plenty bright, but turns off too quickly. Finally, I struggled with a new computer to make the graphics driver provide output that fits the dimensions and resolution of my 17-in. display. I feel like Goldilocks. The displays are all excellent, but each, in some way, doesn't quite fit me. I'm not sure what my ideal display is, but I'll know it when I see it. What about you?

With me the problem in the office is getting the type of displays I want. In other words justifying the expense of 2 or more screens attached to my PC. Once I get them I can easlily adjust for my preferences but it seems my ideal font size (or pixel count) is well within the available options. My problem though is convincing managment that the (small) cost is justified by increased productivity.

At home its another type of problem, I'm an avid gamer and the games keep pushing the envelope of graphics cards. Nothing adds to the immersion of my favorite game (Lord of the Rings Online) more than perfect graphics on my 25" screen. The game allows a ton of fine tuning and level of detail and whenever I buy a new machine I tell the builder this is what I do with the machine, "it must run these graphics at maximum setting". Which I guess explains why the graphic card is the major cost item in the PC. And also why I need a new machine long before anything actually breaks or wears out, its just that the old card cannot support the latest gaming technology. So for me its not so much finding the right display, its keeping current with the latest and greatest that is out there.

3D is coming .... sigh .......better start saving now.
