Tech Coalition to Obama: Set Home Energy info Free

Posted April 05, 2010 9:48 AM

From CNET News.com:

A group of consumer technology companies, including Google, General Electric, and Intel, on Monday urged President Obama to create policies that give consumers better access to home energy information. In a letter, 47 companies and non-governmental organizations said that making detailed data on electricity and fuel use available to consumers is a key step toward meeting national energy and environmental goals. Giving people "actionable information" through computers, smart phones, or in-home energy displays could "unleash the forces of innovation in home and business," according to the letter. If all U.S. households cut energy consumption by 15 percent over the next ten years, the greenhouse gas reductions would be equivalent of taking 35 million cars off the road and save each customer $360 per year, or $46 billion. Consumers should be able to see how electricity is consumed within the home, which will help them find ways to save energy. People should also have access to pricing information and find out the sources of their electricity supply, the letter said. "Technologies exist today that can be deployed to achieve this goal. To ensure success, we need clear rules on consumer access to information; incentives to promote the deployment of technologies, including (utility) cost recovery; programs that educate and engage both providers and energy users; and encouragement of diverse technologies. Robust privacy and security protection for consumers and their information is essential," according to the letter.

How does one make information on individual energy consumption available to the consumer, without making the same information available to any high school hacker that wants to prove he can crack the system?

Probably by putting mems nano-meters on every load in the home, and having your existing energy meter actually turn into a data collection point. (data packets modulated on the power signal? it is AC, so I think its possible.)

I'm not sure we need to be afraid of hackers getting data on this.. I think that is the point. Wider education and awareness is pretty much the Only way to get people to behave differently. The leaders in the energy business have known for years all the principles of lowering the energy costs per capita, but it has not caught on.. most people are simply too lazy to care. So until that level of awareness is brought to every consumer, it won't change. Of course raising prices to astronomical rates will also work, but unfortunately there are so many options available, that won't happen.

One can learn a whole lot about someone else's habits and pursuits just by monitoring their energy consumption- I have actually demonstrated this on a couple of occasions (not intentionally spying- just information that pops out when one monitors power consumption)...And do you really want your neighbors to know that you use 2% more energy than they use?

So, how does this fit in with the typical utility consumption here in Virginia:

1) Dominion (our primary electric power utility) spends oodles of money educating the consumer on power consumption, conservation and savings.

2) Users learn and become aware (ie, suck up the propaganda) and do whatever is in their power to reduce consumption.

3) Dominion visits the SCC (state corporation commission) and petitions for a rate increase because their mandated profits are down due to energy conservation (the people listened, according to Dominion) and they don't have the funds necessary to expand the infrastructure (production and transmission facilities) to anticipate future needs.

4) SCC approves rate increase contingent on future infrastructure plans.

5) Dominion spends oodles of money educating the consumer on why their electric rates are increasing and asking for more conservation...

... rinse, repeat, ad nauseam.

Personally, I'm sick of it. It's MY money that pays for MY utility usage. If I choose to squander MY money, it's MY business. Right now, I'm about maxed out on my electric conservation or interest thereof, short of doing my laundry at 2AM, and yet they're talking about forcing ME to pay for a smart meter to monitor MY usage, quite possibly penalizing me if I don't conform to their idea of proper usage.

I don't want a smart meter. I don't need a smart meter...

Oh, hell, I can rant all day but there are too many who think they know better in this nanny day and age...

And here is the privacy issue...Do you really want someone (Government, Power Company, Green activist, whoever) telling you how to spend your money?

Thay already do. Look at CAFE standards for vehicles. Now government meddling in health care, ad nauseum. And there are no shortage of people who think they have all the right answers and because you are so unenlightened, you should not have the ability to choose. It's high time to take power away from the government. Vote for candidates with smaller gov't platforms.

So, would you think Obama would be interested in "saving" 46 billion?

Only if you let him spend 48 billion for every 46 billion he saves...

No. That would not line up with the goals of the current admin.

Know why they put chicken wire around and over chicken coups? To keep the predators out of the chicken coup. It won't be long until our electric and telcom bills will become 20 pages long in order to provide us chickens with all that green spam.
