3Drawbacks of 3D

Posted April 13, 2010 8:05 AM

From Newlaunches.com:

Everyone's going "Oooh!" and "Aaaah!" with 3D technology, the newest attraction in the world of home entertainment systems. We know you probably are itching to grab one of those mammoth screens off the store shelves. Having seen the Mad Hatter and Pandora come to life in theaters recently, everyone's positively thrilled and overwhelmed, and setting up a system like this in your living room is sure to grab a whole load of attention from family and neighbors alike.

If established well in markets around the globe, 3D technology could change the way we are entertained forever. Think again! Is this technology practical enough to carry home? Well, before you shove your hand in your pocket and pull out a check to pay for one of these, here are a few turn-offs we came across while checking out the buzz being created by 3D.

$3,000.00-$7,000.00, that is not bad for leading adge tech.

Back in the early 90's my friends were putting out 12,000 to 15,000 dollars on home entertainment centers......poor bastards

I saw my first 3D TV back in '99. Thought they might be public by now. Ask the Military. Ya gotta love these so-called "break throughs". Suppose we have to wait another 10 years until the Military lets us morals have the technology.

I don't think there's much restriction on high-end computer graphics - why bother? Rockwell will probably sell you their latest image generator for $50,000 per channel or so. (A channel renders roughly a typical monitor's worth of data. You need to tile a number of channels to make a wide-angle scene. The more channels, the more resolution and realism.) MetaVR has PC-based software for the low low price of $10,000. This'll get you graphics equal to the moneys-no-object state of the art in 1990.

NVidia sells a pair of VR goggles for a few $hundred. They've been reviewed with PS3 games and deemed quite cool enough.

Now, these are flight simulator (or game) graphics, not nearly as high-fidelity as a movie, but they do knock your socks off when you realize it's rendering in real time and can decide to "go over there."

I hope to be deeply involved in military visualization (again) at some point in the near future. I won't be surprised if the majority of visualization outside of mission training is still 2D. It would be awesome to work on changing that, but I think we're just beginning to appreciate the effort involved.
