Road Paved with Pig Manure

Posted April 16, 2010 8:43 AM

From Neatorama:

A stretch of interstate highway near St. Louis, Missouri is now paved with asphalt made from pig manure: "Whew!" gasped a worker with Pace Construction Co., the St. Louis County road contractor that joined forces with Innoventor, the Earth City-based engineering and design firm that perfected the process of converting the animal waste into a bio-oil used in asphalt binder. To others, the air swelled with the sweet smell of potential for new manufacturing opportunities, jobs and, possibly, profits.

This is in my neighborhood. It will be interesting to see how well it holds up to the traffic during the summer months when the 6 flags amusement park near this section is open.

"If this works out, it's a win-win situation for everyone," said Karlton Krause, a hog producer from northern Iowa. "For farmers, it produces revenue. And at the same time, it helps clean the environment. We're taking a waste product and finding a value-added purpose for it."

Government is going to love that when the value-added tax is in effect.

There still be a value added tax on it, not wouldn't there be.

And why just pig manure?

Interesting because the nitrogen value of the manure is a small fortune in its self. Unless there is not enough land to spread it on, and the N concentration would generate a concentration Nitrates in the feed raise on the land such as corn, which when feed to animals is poison.

I believe the majority of the nitrates is stored in the lower parts of the stalks.

One other concern or were it would Maybe beneficial is the large operations like the ones in South Carolina and such.

I'm not sure what they mean by "Bio Oil"

I do know that Biodiesel is a better solvent than regular diesel, in terms of the ability to thin asphalt. An improved bond is achieved in an application such as chip sealing.

This is all fine and dandy, but will is this survive freeze thaw cycles through a good winter? What kind of ESALs can it hand? I'm not sure about St Louise, but if they really wanted to give it a test drive they should send the formula to PENNSTATE University and put it through a PA season.

I guess that would depend on how it's processed. We had a vendor sent us cherry scented asphalt, because of complaints we where recieving about the smell of our PG64-22. It was a mixture of cherry cough syrup and asphalt smells mixed together. Talking about making you feel sick.
