Do You Really Need an iPad?

Posted April 18, 2010 9:24 AM

No one would deny Apple Computer's ability to enter the market with its new gadgets, but after all the hype and excitement in the media, one must ask, what on earth is Apple doing with this new iPad touch screen tablet computer? Isn't this just a bigger version of the iPhone? What new element of computing does it bring to the world that hasn't already been done: games, music, e-mail, photography, web surfing? Is this "paradigm changer" just another effort on the part of the electronics industry to make some quick money?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Packaging & Labeling, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Packaging & Labeling today.

A couple of months ago we had another thread in which we discussed the whether or not of the iPad. The OP pointed out that it would never be a replacement for the laptop. And in truth, I agreed with him. But, I do not consider the iPad to be a laptop replacement. Rather, I think it to be something in addition to a laptop.

Consider. If you're on a four hour flight, which would you rather pull out of your bag to check your e-mail or maybe read an ebook or magazine, a pad or your 15" laptop? The pad is a delightful idea for such light work. It's lighter, smaller and sleeker than a netbook, and while it doesn't have a keyboard, can you imagine trying to type a 30 page report on a netbook keyboard? Never the less, it's keyboarding capabilities are more than adequate for typing a web address or a search command. And the thing is smaller than an issue of Computer Shopper.

The point is that the pad no more a game changer than the laptop was a game changer. Or is it? The laptop is nothing more than a portable version of a desktop, right? A pad is nothing more than a somewhat more portable laptop. But look at how the laptop has changed the computer market. And already, HP is preparing to step up to the plate with their own version. Can Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo be far behind?

I think apple may have stumbled in this area. With $100 book readers in the pipeline to come out soon, who wants to buy apple. I have always found it over priced and useful as an appliance. The phone seem to have been a huge success, but this looks like a stumble.

I have already received about as much enjoyment from and iPad that I think I could get and I don't even own one: Will It Blend?

Apperatly has limited features inc RAM, no USB port and it is hardly any cheaper than a Lap-Top. As I read it - "It's an extended version of an iphone" - whatever that means.

I guess i am a little late on this, FYI , But i have bought one for myself and I am loving it !

ipad will surely take Apple into an altogether different league, just that they should handle the iphone 4 decable nicely.

I generally avoid Apple because they always make a closed and costly ecology.

All applications through them and they get a large fee on each one.

People buy their products and spend more than competing products.

I think we will see the android ecology gather steam and pass it by. Apple was a pioneer in personal computing, but their closed ecology enabled the open ecology of IBM compatibles to win
