Pathfinder Tags: chernobyl

From Wired Top Stories:

Design flaws, compounded by human errors, cause Soviet engineers to lose control of a reaction at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A partial meltdown occurs. Many die. Many more suffer. The final count of victims may not be over yet. When someone says "nuclear disaster" you don't think Three Mile Island. You probably don't think Windscale Fire. The worst possible disaster and it only directly killed < 100 people, with the deaths due to increased cancer rates are so small as to be undetectable.

I'm not saying that nukes plants are completely safe, but the level of risk seems quite low when compared to driving cars, smoking, obesity, asbestos, gun "accidents", cycling, white water rafting etc.

All very valid points. But you cannot calm irrational fears with rational thoughts. Don't forget though, part of the fear is that people can imagine much greater disasters than what will ever happen.
