More Colleges, Professors Shutting Down Laptops and Other Digital Distractions

Posted April 26, 2010 10:25 AM

From Wash Post Technology:

As a culture, we're at an odd crossroads regarding personal computers. For years, educators have been clamoring to put technology in the hands of young students through partnerships with big tech companies, best symbolized by the One Laptop Per Child initiative. But by the time those kids grow up, they might well find university authorities waging a war on laptops in the classroom.

If other digital devices are cell phone, IPod and stuff, yes.

When I was going to college, if I did not have my calculator I felt exposed, like somethings missing, probably like the slide rule was to the previous gen, and like the computer (laptop) is today.

problem is that the computer can do so much more, other then class room assignments, it could be a distraction.

It would be up to the professor lay down some rules and consequences, and let the student decide if its worth it, as along as if/when the students cross the line, the students don't cry thats unfair.

I'm with you. If I were a professor I would be positively outraged standing there lecturing while students were "clickity-clicking" away at a text-message or had earbuds in, etc. I'd pass out maps to the nearest Starbucks and inform them if they're going to waste Mommy & Daddy's money they might as well do it while observing their future careers.

Laptops become somewhat trickier though. Not sure what you could do there. They are useful for taking notes, etc. But then again...so's a pencil and paper.
