Lack Of Volcanic Ash Data Worries Industry

Even though the disruption of European air traffic is expected to trigger a full-court press to better understand the impact of volcanic ash on aircraft, the aviation industry has to face the reality that there is a dearth of scientific data on the subject. One of the most important lessons to emerge out of the past few days is how little is known about the real danger of flying through volcanic ash.

This became apparent to me last week when they reported that they were sending up multi-million dollar aircraft to see if they came back with destroyed engines to see if it was safe to fly. That's like sending out the village idiot to see if the lions are still there.
