Top 10 Things Hollywood Thinks Computers Can Do

Posted May 04, 2010 2:48 PM

From Expert Reviews:

A couple of weeks ago we covered the Top 10 biggest tech flaws in films, this week we've got a kind of sequel (in the best Hollywood tradition), and we're looking at the Top 10 myths has about how computers work in the real world. Now we understand the need to 'sex up' computers, as they'd otherwise be incredibly boring, but must these stereotypes persist?

I am surprised the biggest one of all was missed - that computer operating systems (no matter how alien or advanced) are almost always shown to be compatible with existing earth-standard operating systems. We are all aware of plug-and-play compatibility now-days, but this is ridiculous. Anyone still remember the pre-Pentium computer days when hardware had to be set manually.

A prime example of this is the movie 'Independence Day' where a computer using a standard windows operating system was used (of all things) to download a virus written in C programming language directly into the alien mothership's computer. Just how large a monopoly does Microsoft have?

one thing about this

2. Screens must light up people's faces

For some reason, Hollywood believes that when someone uses a monitor, it must without fail project its image over their face. The power required for a monitor to do this would be immense - well, let's face it, you'd actually have to have a projector inside. Can you imagine what this would do to your eyes if your monitor worked like this? You'd definitely be blind.

Then there's the question of privacy. Sitting there with what you're viewing plastered all over your face would give the game away to the point where even Internet Explorer's InPrivate browsing would be entirely pointless.

Back in the eighties. This would never happen, but I recall, the company I worked for received (1) huge monitor at the time. 18 or 19" screens. (to Me they looked used.)

We had a dickhead for a senior CAD operator, (he was senior because he was hired 2 months before anyone else) and he called it his, we were putting in 12 hour days working second shift.

At the end of the night, we were leaving this dickhead turned to us and asked "You guys leaving already. Its so relaxing on this large monitor I could work all night"

I turned to him busted out laughing and ask "Joe you ok"

He said what.

I told him you have a bad case of 1st degree burns on your face. and its white around your eyes. He didn't understand, so I told him to look in the mirror, and told him you work any more on the machine and you have cancer in 5 years.

Well, it turns out no one used that monitor again, and on top of it, it was a used unit the CFO pick up for a song.

At back to the topic.

No not a reflection on your face, just sunburn.
