Aboard the Plucky 'Plastiki'

Posted May 07, 2010 1:13 PM

From NYT > Science:

On March 20, the Plastiki, a 60-foot vessel made from recycled plastic bottles, set sail from San Francisco Bay on an 11,000-mile voyage to Sydney, Australia. The goal of the voyage, masterminded and financed by a banking heir, David de Rothschild, is to call attention to environmental issues like bottled water and plastic waste.

As far as I am aware, the only country that has put a refund on all plastic (PET) bottles of €0,25 is Germany, which has dramatically reduced the appearance of such bottles in the rubbish or even on common land etc....

If other countries followed suite, the problem would probably be resolved....

In Germany, I take the empties with me to a shop and a special machine automatically recognises the bottle, cuts it up into tiny pieces and credits me with €0,25 each time....

The same machine also takes returnable glass bottles (and crates full of empties) and packs the loose bottles into other empty crates. Also credit is given for these.....

The plastic bits are sold to Far eastern countries who turn them into cheap clothing...... believe it or not!!
