I'm not sure anybody has a straight story on how many Tirebirds were
built by Jerry Titus and Terry Godsall to promote and race on the new
B.F. Goodrich radials in 1970. Add in the fact that Goodrich wanted
Titus to build several replicas for further promotional purposes, and
the story gets murkier. Two? Three? Six? Seven? The seller of this particular Tirebird says it's the third of three, and one of two to still exist.
From the seller's description: "Sponsored by BF Goodrich Radial Tires and driven by Canadian champion
John Cordts and Larry Dent, this car was raced in Trans Am, The Daytona
24 Hours, Sebring 12 Hours, SCCA and CSCC club events. BF Goodrich made
special tires for the team and they eventually became the first
production car to win a race using radial tires . . . The team convinced the SCCA
to allow this car to run with a Chevy engine instead of the problematic
Pontiac engine based on the fact that Canadian Firebirds were delivered with Chevy engines."
