Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Cool Cars: 1948 Packard

Posted June 02, 2010 12:01 AM by dstrohl

Every now and then, I think I'd like to get a tattoo. Sure, everybody and their grandmother has one nowadays, so they don't carry the sailor-on-shore-leave stigma they used to, but a tattoo is more than a social statement. It's an expression of commitment to whatever that tattoo stands for. Still, rather than face the risk of risk laser tattoo removal surgery, a person could get a Packard.

This 1948 Packard Super 8 was completely stripped down to the framework. The engine was completely factory-rebuilt and reinstalled, too. Many of the engine parts have been chromed. The vehicle has a new muffler and lambo doors, and the hood has been modified to tilt forward. Yeah, the wiring and interior still need to be done, but the headliner is in good condition.

Forget the Packard. Get a cute little CR4 logo tat on your nose. It's such a conversation starter and much cheaper than a Packard.

Sweet....

An auto body shop near me had an old Packard, one of the last Packards made, I had just got my driver's license (1964) and I wanted it BAD.

It had the 406 under the hood ( same one Studebaker used) gold (colored) accents on the instruments, all the stuff that that indicated this was a deluxe edition.

I remember my Dad telling me that Packard parts, especially rear ends and transmissions were real popular with the stock car crowd.

I wanted it BAD.

The shop owner could not sell it, due to some issues with the title or something.

So, I would visit it occasionally, watching the weeds grow up around it until it faded away.

A tatoo is a temporary commitment in many applications.Too many subjects ignore the passing of time.
