Will Intel Kill USB 3.0?

Posted May 27, 2010 7:52 AM

Manufacturers are lining up to adopt and support the new, faster USB 3.0. Intel is not one of them. Instead, Wired.com reports that the company plans to offer "Light Peak", an even faster fiber optic technology with smaller connectors and more flexible cables. At its lowest speed, still 2.5x as fast as USB 3.0, Light Peak could transmit an entire Blu-Ray movie in under 30 seconds.

USB 3.0 was obsolete before it was deployed. Only a 10x increase is marginal in these times and isn't going to last very long. I would have to say Intel is doing the right thing.

I agree with you. The only advantage I see with USB 3.0 is the backward hardware capability. This will keep people's existing USB 2.0 hardware functioning but the speed increase is only a next step and not a leap. But if I had a dollar for every wrong prediction I've made about new technology...
