Transferring Oil from Broken Well an Option for BP

Posted July 09, 2010 8:24 AM

From Yahoo! News: Science News:

The first of two relief wells being drilled to stop the Gulf oil gusher could be done by the end of the month, BP officials say, but if that doesn't succeed, one backup being considered is transferring the crude to non-producing underwater wells that are miles away.

There would be a delay between implementing what is already started and formulating a new solution. You have run out of options. The public is not going to wait around for a solution that should have been done months ago.

Hi there,

The seeming lackadaisical response to the GOM incident is riding on nerves yes. However discussion began of what measures could be taken to mitigate an event such as is on going last November on CR4. I recall consensus was reached over several scenarios, just so you know all is not as it seems.

Our culture has been influenced by TV and other examples where problems are solved instantly and we have become accustomed to this instant cure. However we need adjust our collective expectations to the reality of task being undertaken. Instantaneous results are hoped for but there is no guarantee and one can not replace the time it takes for a tree to grow; correct?

I heard a platform is being relocated to Egypt due the uncertainty of GOM operations and others will go and it's okay; this too will pass.

BP has no interest in stopping the oil flow. If they were to have stopped/plugged the well within days, the government would not have allowed BP back into the area. It is in the best interest of BP financially to continue the spill until they can capture the oil on the surface via ship or rig. Under water demolition teams could have imploded the pipe in the beginning. We have the technology to use hydraulics to form metals using demolition techniques. The pipe was filled with primarily gas. A shape charge outside the pipe would have crushed the pipe closing the leak.

BP has no interest in stopping the oil flow.

Read what I said in detail and you will understand. If on the first day the oil had been stopped, BP would not have been allowed to drill two relief wells. BP wants to CAPTURE and POSSESS the oil.

I did read your post and I did not, and still do not, understand.

Do the sums - potential profit from that one well compared to the damages/liabilities resulting from this spill. BP management might have made some serious mistakes, but they are neither that stupid nor that uncaring of the environment.

"OK, listen up you guys, let's just leave this thing flowing until we have destroyed our reputation, the fishing industry and the beaches and we are bankrupt and out of work; because if we don't, they may not let us keep this one itty bitty well."
