Questionable Supply Chain for U.S. Passport Parts Fixed

Posted July 18, 2010 8:13 AM

New U.S. electronic passports are assembled in the United States. But the supply chain includes a factory in Thailand that produces the chip assemblies. Over the years security concerns have been brought up about this practice, which currently allows only one in five assemblies to be put together in the Thai factory. By the end of July this should end. How should similar security snafus be avoided in the future?

The answer is obvious, even to the most casual observer.

Upon further review, the article states That the passports are assembled in the US and that the Thailand factory produces the chip and then goes on to say that the "Assemblies are put together in the Thia factory?????

Let me apologize up front for stating some obvious points. But then again, maybe it is not obvious to everyone as evidenced by the fact that out US government officials cannot see it.

There is no justifiable reason for the US government to be using a foreign company in the manufacture of a passport.

The cost savings for having the chip assemblies manufactured outside of the USA can only be pennies. The cost to make sure that additional chip assemblies are not going out the back door is millions.

The cost of manufacturing and issuing a passport is paid for by the applicant. If the cost to manufacture a passport is a buck or two more, the application fee could be increased by this amount.
