The boom in wind power development in China is putting the squeeze on world supply of rare earth magnet materials. The Chinese wind power sector is predicted to consume 70,000 tons of neodymium, approximately 3½ times 2008 production, between now and 2018-19. Will this serve as a wake-up call for development of magnet industries in other regions, or will leadership be ceded to the Chinese?
