Butter Holds the Secret to the Latest Biodiesel Fuel

Posted August 16, 2010 8:40 AM

From New York Times:

Butter is not the fuel of the future, but it is possible to churn perfectly good diesel fuel out of it. "It was something we wanted to show could be done," said Michael J. Haas, a research biochemist at the United States Department of Agriculture.

Pure genius! They can make fuel out of animal fat! Who would have ever thunk such a thing is possible?

With progress like this we should be able to regress to living in caves in just a few years!

Can't help myself sometimes! Sorry 'bout that!

I think I got banned from a site one time for making a sarcastic comment about some girl that drove across the US after graduation from college using waste vegetable oil - most of which she got for free - just to show that i is possible. She was so proud of herself!

I remarked something to the effect that what a wonderful use of her education - no one would have ever thought that if you put fuel in a car you could drive across country.

I believe I also added that it seemed she might put her education to a bit better use than to do a 'drive about'. Nothing wrong with making a trip after graduation but at least one should admit they are 'goofing off' and not try to make a big deal out of it.

With a good education a youngster can do all sorts of great things to help the environment and themselves. Most of those things mean starting at the bottom on some not so exciting job in order to get experience to go on to bigger and better works.

There was lots of talk about animal fat conversion to BioD in 07-08

It's not very practical economically, the extra processing steps suck the profit right out.

then there's the cloud point which is horrible

we seem to be plagued with especially bad infotainment in the engineering news section of late, as the bloggers struggle to make their daily quota

Too many bloggers trolling the websites for MIT, Stanford and other universities picking up half baked ideas and not understanding what they are looking at they write a post telling how great the 'new' thing is.

Real reporters and writers seem to be outnumbered by at least 1000 to 1 by the newbie who answers an ad on a site that says, 'would you like to write for us'. The site owner could care less what is written as long as it gets clicks.

For many sites it seems commitment to an idea is far more important than factual reporting.
