What's Your Privacy Worth?

Posted August 24, 2010 7:56 AM

Stores offer discounts while tracking your purchases with "preferred member" cards, Google provides free email as their advertisements track your searches, and your phone's GPS can locate you within meters. Marketers will claim they are providing the consumer with an enhanced experience, but at what point do you draw the line between convenience and invasion of privacy?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Electrical Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Electrical Components today.

When my privacy is invaded, of course.

Give them a fake address so they can't mail you.

Give them a fake phone number so they can't call you.

Get on the Do-Not-Call registry.

Give them a disposable email address so they can't spam you.

Use Firefox with ad blocking.

Pay with cash.

(As far as the phone/GPS thing, you want that when you dial 911)

Personally, that's as far as I need to go.

But if you're worth half a billion dollars, other options present themselves.

Privacy--what privacy?--Big Brothers are everywhere. Just clear the skeletons out of your closet, and boldly bare all!

The least of our worries and something we have very little control over.
