Security System Identifies Faces in Real-Time

Posted September 01, 2010 8:11 AM

From The Engineer - News:

A new type of infrared security camera is being used to identify individual faces in real time. The CheckPoint.S system from UK firm OmniPerception can recognise faces in seconds - even when they are moving, at a wide angle or in poor light - by capturing and analysing images and comparing them to a database. As well as alerting security teams to a suspect's presence, the system can also be used to confirm the identity of invited guests entering a building.

Yeah but not everyone will want blue lines painted on their face.

The thing would have quite a workout with Joseph Merrick.

I wonder how well such a device will actually work in a real-world setting.

Say it's programmed to "be on the lookout" for a few hundred faces and is plunked down in a busy airport where tens of thousands of people stream through each day. Quite a few of those people will surely have faces "close enough" to those being sought. Don't know about y'all, but in crowds I've often mistaken people for someone I knew or noted how they looked very like someone else. Can't believe the device is significantly better at recognizing faces than humans are.

And such a device won't be distracted looking out the window or at a newspaper like us. It will be constantly scanning faces, increasing the chances for a match - or a mismatch.

Just can't help but think the false positives will be annoyingly high.

only have to stuff some cotton in your cheeks to defeat the system. swing your jaw to the side, wear some contacts and facial hair will help... shiny skin (sweaty and oily) long hair covering the face helps too. (and say arrrr matey!)

This is sounding like you have some experience in hiding from security systems?

Obviusly not, he forgot the inner plastic rings to widen your nosetrials, stuffing your upper lip, glueing one ear while making the other protuberant with a piece of tape, and finally joining both eyebrows with a fake moustache.

This is new? Such scanners are commercially available and have been for some time.

Simply the next step up from fingerprint scanners.

Well, the "idea" of scanning first to select part of a video feed and recognize that it's a face...then the ability to classify characteristics of a face in a video feed...then the database of those characteristics of persons of interest to attempt to find any matches.

This combination of applying these techniques under this particular government contract was apparently to also study and apply all of the current best-practices but use near-infrared spectrum only to eliminate many of the lighting (and disguise) problems. This paired with a smaller, high access-speed database of only the faces being sought (rather than a universal database to identify each face) makes it a potentially useful system for specific purposes.

The famous "most wanted" posters included a handful of photos that law enforcement were expected to memorize and recognize by sight...this limited, focused IR+database can scan for thousands within seconds and alert any 'possible match' for further investigation by humans, very similar to the preceding systems you mention but it is an improvement noteworthy for success in lmiited 'real-world' trials - though big brother once again gets a bit bigger, of course....

Yes they are; in the black market, BTW I've got to talk to the manager, mine's not working properly, it scans in unreal time.

download control to defensive, legal, security enabled, wireless, motion sensor controlled security system that fortifies the perimeter buildings and proceeds to contact appropriate government agencies as it requests from you permission to engage, photo to the phone picture of suspect.

All sensor-ed out with internal wired and wireless tech to secure interior of facility.?

Funny funny ha-ha?
