Green Manufacturing: Reality or Fad?

Posted September 05, 2010 8:00 AM

Companies are spending big bucks to invest in more efficient lighting systems, high-efficiency motors, and telling their customers that they care about the environment. But, can these companies truly sustain their sustainability efforts? Will they also be able to turn a profit and stay in business? Will some companies go back to their wasteful ways if they can't find the right balance?

"Green" is nothing more than a marketing label.

If it helps the bottom line a smart company will introduce "green" technologies into their machinations. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with responsible stewardship of our planet though. Only profit margins.

They're taking a gamble that going green will increase their revenue. They have to be able to justify that the investment will increase profit margins. Changing lighting systems isn't going to save enough money right away to justify the investment. They are gambling with using the Going Green will attract more customers and make up that cost with increased revenue.

Each organization has its own corporate ethics to protect the environment for future generation. Governments are trying their best to introduce sustainable technology wherever possible to save the planet earth from further disaster.

Going 'green' is often no more than what we or a company should have done long past. When replacing equipment or systems look at the long term economy - including subsidies, tax credits etc.

Then a company can advertise how wonderful they are in saving the world (while they save money) and the sierra gives them brownie points. What a wonderful world it is!

Where natural gas is available some large companies are installing fuel cells to generate power - effectively setting their 24 hour a day power cost in relation to natural gas. They beat the TOU rates plus have emergency power to boot. Not to mention that the greens get all excited about such a wonderful company.
