Is This the Rebirth of Manufacturing?

Posted September 19, 2010 7:35 AM

Some companies are abandoning their plans to outsource work overseas, citing escalating wages, high transportation costs, and threats to intellectual property. Will these factors along with advancing automation bring manufacturing back to the forefront in North American markets? Will these changes allow more small businesses and one-person shops to advance manufacturing?

A major problem with trying to reawaken manufacturing in the US is that we have lost a generation or more in the development of some critical skills. For instance, a "machinist" today is one who can operate a CNC machine- how many machinists do you know today that would understand "feed and speed"? Many other skills are being lost that are critical to a manufacturing base, because all of the skilled labor is retiring without any provision to train replacements...

Manufacturing technology, and the trained labour, support the creation of value in an economy. Both require infrastructure to support them. Without the infrastructure, both will slowly evaporate.

Therefore, to grow the manufacturing base, the supporting infrastructure for technology and knowledge must also grow proportionally. The faster the knowledge base grows, then, the faster the technology infrastructure grows, and subsequently, the better supported is the manufacturing of products.
