Downtime: Essential for Creativity

Posted September 12, 2010 8:26 AM

Feeling guilty about daydreaming at work? California executive coach Karen Duncan wants you to do more of it, as she emphasizes the importance of planning downtime at work to spur new ideas. Other techniques include designating a special space for creative thinking and scheduling time for leisure activities that let your mind run free. Some managers use their smartphones to dictate random ideas that crop up during downtime.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Quality Control, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Quality Control today.

My creativity is best during unplanned thoughts,

most often in full moon nights

with sleep near wake up and consciousness existing but different from day-time.

When I was working I had the opportunity to do the majority of my creative stuff from home. It was much easier than in a designated work space provided by someone else. The freedom to wander in the woods and fields was very helpful in my creative process.

I also find that creativity can be high when I sleep! How many times have many of you found that when you woke you had the answer or a new idea?

Since I'm retired my creativity has sky rocketed!

All this is really saying is that left free reign (read, feeling like your time is not owed to someone or something else) the mind automatically drifts to where our "passion(s)" lie. Creativity is a natural feature of the mind. For some people even on their "own" time they have problems that occupy the mind with worry, etc. If "you" watch, you'll notice that the problem solving process is to "feel" blank while images cross your mental screen. So what is it that "picks" the image that seems like a winner?

I'll vote for that... even with issues like the Haiti crisis, and the discussion we had here, which prompted a strong creative streak in me, corresponds under the term 'passion(s)' = compassions...
