U.S. in a Tweet Mood

Posted September 17, 2010 7:32 AM

Folks in the western U.S. are happier; the East Coast is grumpy. Or so says a Northeastern University analysis of 300 million words used in tweets, covered in this news clip. Tech experts are getting craftier at using Internet stats, but as British statesman George Canning once said, you can use stats to prove anything, except the truth. Is the tweet analysis credible, potentially useful? Or, irrelevant?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Mechanical Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Mechanical Components today.

It's very useful to totalitarian governments with lots of technical savvy. Think the PRC.

I wonder if these statistics are really representative of a cross-section of the societies they are comparing. With the unemployment and loss of housing in the West maybe people can not afford to waste money on Tweeting.

About 75% employable and employed people (and 99% or the retired) in the USA are unaffected by the current economic problems except for worrying some about their own situations and whining about it.

Tweeting is instant gratification without the calories or fear of long term debt. It fits this situation quite well.

Perfect for the Tea Party crowd who don't want to think any deeper than the screaming 30 second sound bytes they are addicted to. Or the kids whose image of George Washington is that he must have been quite a stud for being "Father of Our Country" and know that Mom's place has a soft couch and plenty of food.

Captain eddy, I am happy to learn that great wisdom lives still in the high mountain desert of the great basin. I grew up in the sump of Lake Bonneville and the aroma of grandma's smoked bonneville salt fish pies still lingers in my memory.

You see the problem clearly; most Americans are blessed but, through the smoke and mirrors of day-to-day life, they believe that they feel just about the way they should, under the present circumstances. Their defaults are set and denial, anger and apathy levels are harmonically balanced for for a long run on whine.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

The real question is, how tough is it to turn a mind around, when it's stampeding with the herd?

Engineer a simple fix for this one and I promise I'll make you a king.

Wow kind of harsh on the women there, considering under the current economic situation women have a slightly higher employment rate and earn about $1.08 for every $ men earn. Mabe what you meant is Dad's place is on the couch eating bonbons
