Life-Simplifying Devices

Posted October 03, 2010 8:26 AM

Knee-deep into the info age, we were supposed to give up paper. We haven't. We're going wireless, but wires are everywhere. We watch TV or movies on laptops, and scan spreadsheets on a cell phone for tomorrow's business meeting while attending a school open house. It's common for folks to carry a personal cell phone, a kindle, a laptop; some even add a pager or work mobile phone. Aren't devices supposed to be UNcomplicating our lives? What's in your briefcase, bag or pocket?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Mechanical Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Mechanical Components today.

I find myself carrying digital camera and video products more of late, as we have two new grandchildren in our extended family.

The other day we were reminiscing about all the bs involved in 'the old days' with film based cameras, and why didn't manufacturers market them with '1000 picture development' built into the cost of the camera. but we also talked about the difference of enjoying digital pictures on the laptop/pc versus waiting a month to finish the 36 pictures on the roll (as one had to be economical with such an expensive thing as film)

these days I can take more pictures in an hour than I ever would have taken in a year in the 80's.

The other technology I enjoy is right here on cr4, and making friends from around the world... there is very simply little that can compare with that.

My pocket list: Leatherman charge,(I even had it @ my wedding), home rolled smokes, zippo, flint striker for when the zippo is empty, pocket vernier, a tiny retractable 2m tape, piece of biltong(jerky), 2mm not 0.2, rotring retractable pencil with integrated sharpener, some business cards to hand out when the need arises but more often used to make notes on. some pocket fluff. That's the daily load-out.

I have just one "traditional" mobile phone in my pocket and one laptop in my home. Of course, it's all a matter of the nature of somebody's work. My own work doesn't demand to travel or roam outside my office, so I don't really need those modern smartphones or to carry another laptop with me. I'm not a "techno-freak" afterall...

I try to avoid to print the e-texts that I want to read (ecological concern). (And when I do this, I keep the one-side printed papers and I use their blank side for notes.) However, it's hard to read long texts or whole books on your p.c. screen. So, I plan to buy a digital book device. (My brother bought one and it was really convenient.)

I like the idea of a "pocket list." Insofar as life-simplifying devices, I think my cell phone tops the list. On it I have a web browser, a scientific calculator, turn-by-turn GPS, weather station, db/rms analyser, periodic table, compass, guitar tuner, voice recorder, note pad, camera, pocket constitution, bible, and "google goggles." (Items not listed in order of importance.)

Heck, other than that I carry a kershaw spring assist, zippo, gerber multi-tool, flash drive, wallet and keys. Soon to come is a CHL and 13*.40 JHP. ;)

MacGyver was a sissy. Hehehe.

While I do carry the mandatory wallet, keys, cash, and dumb cellphone, the main thing I never forget is my Ruger LCP and a couple of spare clips.

The LCP is meant to ensure my life does not become complicated beyond my normally minimalist lifestyle.

Reminds me of me, except I'm a Glock 19.

Heh, heh, I wanted a Glock 30 for day to day carry, but I just couldn't justify the price differential between it and the LCP.

Way beyond knee-deep, I believe we are over our head in the information age. I see personal technology (laptops, phones, PDA,s etc) as being a mass information device. Too much is not necessarily a bad thing as we can choose to access only the information we need. Of course, much of the near-unlimited information is clouded with advertising (not necessarily by choice); perhaps another CR4 thread.

An example of a device that makes Life simpler are developments of plumbing coupled with a water pump. One used to have to crank a well pump to get water then carry in in pails to the house. Now, simpler, we turn a knob or position a level or even wave our hands (hands free water control) to get water (a basic sustenance resource). This device makes life simpler.

In my bag or pocket is a rosary and a picture of my family. And that is NOT a gun in my pocket; I am just excited to see my wife.
