So Long, Pacific Trash Vortex. Hello Diesel Fuel

Posted September 21, 2010 8:30 AM

From Fast Company:

There is nothing new or good about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (aka the Pacific Trash Vortex), a country-sized mass of plastic debris in the North Pacific Gyre. But Project Kaisei and Covanta Energy hope to bring a positive spin to the problem with a partnership that could eventually process nonrecyclable plastic waste from the garbage patch into diesel fuel. The collaboration between Kaisei, an ocean cleanup initiative, and Covanta, a renewable energy company, was brokered by the Clinton Global Initiative.

I've been brainstorming solutions to this mess for years. This sounds like a great concept for autonomous cleanup vessels. Suck up the plastic, convert it to diesel, power the filter, processing, locomotion and emission scrubbers.

Problem solved!

I think wayne keith has had his gassifier powered woodgas truck up to 90mph on a combination of waste plastic and chicken crap as fuel. Using plastic to fuel a vehicle or gas powered engine is nothing new to the yahoo woodgas group.

Well I'd like to see them build a ship efficiently autonomous that is can seek- lift- dry- burn- propel- seek- lift- dry- burn- propel continuously..

that would be something new I'm guessing?
