Can GE Jumpstart the EV Industry?

Posted November 03, 2010 7:00 AM by Steve Melito

In 1901, General Electric's vice president of engineering bought a Baker Electric Car. Edwin W. Rice, Jr. later became president of GE; his EV still runs today. Fast forward to 2010, and one of Rice's successors announces that General Electric is ready to buy "tens of thousands" of electric vehicles. What would E.W Rice say about current CEO Jeffrey Immelt?

In a recent speech in London, Immelt pledged to put half of GE's sales force behind the wheel of an electric vehicle. General Electric isn't going green just because it's good for the environment. Electric vehicles make good business sense for a company that will invest $10 billion (USD) on clean energy technology over the next five years.

So which automakers will get GE's business? Will the winning vehicle be the Nissan Leaf, the new Ford Focus, Toyota's RAV4 SUV, or GM's plug-in Volt hybrid? Honda, Chrylsler, and BMW are players in the EV industry, too.

Applying half the sales force is not nearly as productive or as impressive as applying half their engineering workforce to the cause.

We don't need more sales people trying to convince us that their overpriced crap is good. We need more engineers designing solid reliable and efficient products that people will like and feel happy for owning because they are worth it.
