A Hybrid Vehicle for Your Driveway?

Posted November 25, 2010 7:32 AM

As the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf hit the market, there are more mass-produced hybrid-vehicle options than ever. In fact, the variety of technologies challenges the government's ability to develop meaningful gas/electric economy labels. New technology is never cheap, but will any of the current concepts meet your needs? If not, what technical capabilities must be achieved for a hybrid vehicle to fit your lifestyle?

Price - I have zero interest in prepaying the petrol bill for a car for a 10 year period plus having to pay interest on it.

People buy new cars for ego and status reasons, rarely because of economic reasons. Don't believe me? Look at how many hummers were sold.

If hybrids become fashionable they'll sell. Look at the Prius, it sells. Ffej

At the high prices and lack of style (Chevy Volt has some style) for PHEV and EV; I won't be buying one soon. And an EV with only 60-100 miles of range per day is not practical because of running on empty anxiety. If it had a range of 200-300 miles and can be charged in 5 minutes; and cost less than $25k; Then I'd consider one.

I am interested in a simpler, lighter, and less expensive vehicle - more in line with a covered motorcycle, or something more like a golf cart, for in-town use. Something that is mostly electric but with a small backup (maybe even an ICE using natural gas).

45 mph top speed would work. A hybrid that produced power could be used as an emergency power supply for some household appliances.
