Engineers Needed (or Not)?

Posted December 07, 2010 7:00 AM

The International Fluid Power Society predicts need for more than 159,000 (how did they get that number?) engineers over the next five years. Do you think that is a reasonable estimate, or is it more of the same old "blue sky" optimism from such professional organizations?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Hydraulics, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Hydraulics today.

I read an article a few weeks ago that stated that there would be a loss of 59,000 engineering jobs in the next decade. Odd how the 59 shows up in both articles.

There can't be both a loss and a gain in jobs so one is based on a wrong assumption. As to which.......?

In the long term they are both probably wrong. A little knowledge tells me we are going to lose a lot of baby boomers from the work force, so there will be more jobs available not less. I seriously doubt the real number will match up to the prediction.

59,000 is to much and since the world economy is getting better,there are few chances of seeing that happen on the next decade but maybe I was going to agree if you talked about century or more.

"how did they get that number?"

perhaps they used a percentage of the population?

159,000 x
------------ = -----
300,000,000 100

x = 0.02~ %

not very big percentage to design and maintain all the hydraulics in the us.

Chris

x = .00196

In Canada they seem to be doing away with the industrial exemption. So more P Eng's will be required where formerly you could do the job without one. That should add a large number of jobs.
