Poland's "Crooked House"

Posted December 08, 2010 8:36 AM

From Boing Boing:

The Krzywy Domek (Crooked House) is part of a shopping center in Sopot, Poland. The 2004 structure looks like a set from Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari, but according to Wikipedia, it was "designed by Szotyńscy & Zaleski who were inspired by the fairytale illustrations and drawings of Jan Marcin Szancer and Per Dahlberg."

That's really funky. Must have had trouble cutting those window panes...

Frost heaving has been known to make normal structures look like that given enough time too.

A true work of art by a master craftsman. The people involved in this would have learned a few tricks of the trade in building it. Respect, Ky.

Sopot is an interesting place, I did not go through the building but it did not seem to have the same character all the way through as a Hundertwasser or Gaudi building does. http://www.flatrock.org.nz/topics/photographs/hundertwassers_ultimate_stand.htm

I found it amazing that near the top of the Gaudi Cathedral (20 years ago) the same level of interesting detail was maintained even though the pigeons were probably going to be the only ones to appreciate it. That is proabably why it took so long to complete.
