Cell Phone Radiation Worries or Not?

Posted December 12, 2010 7:00 AM

Maximum radio frequency emissions from cell phones as measured by the specific absorption rate (SAR) must be below 2 W/kg in Europe and below 1.6 W/kg in Canada and the U.S. Unfortunately, these guidelines don't reflect typical exposure, but only the max possible. Nevertheless, do you take SAR into account when you select a cell phone?

No.

The reason is that my use is pretty low. I only use it when I have to and not as an everyday toy.

I just picked up an iPhone 4. It's pretty neat, but is still only a tool and like any tool, just because I have a cool hammer does not mean everything I see is a nail.

Ah, But some children here in the UK use it all the time, in fact I caught my grandaughter using hers to play games for three hours, and I believe that at that rate it can be dangerous?

Depends on proximity to the body. Radiation strength is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source. So it does not take much distance to see a significant drop in radiation.

Playing (off-line) games uses the internal resources of the phone so it does not result radiation.

As long as the phone is active (i.e., not disabled like some can for what is known as airport mode) the phone is periodically transmitting and receiving from the cell tower.

My Grandaughter plays with other players on line with her mobile phone, so her phone IS on, and it has cause a slight reddening of her skin on her upper legs in patches, in turn this is itchy so she tells me, so I have made sure that she doesn't do it again and told her mother!

No, I seldom consider this factor.

Here's a visual on the seemingly non-existent radiation. You make the call on this one, or try it yourself.

Hoax.

It's a well known hoax that has been proved false.

No. I've been an RF engineer for years, and am exposed to much higher levels of radiation in my work, than I could ever get from a cell phone. It is mere paranoia from the greenies and other weirdos that has propagated this whole thing! Please stop messing with my life Mr. Obama!

Apparently paranoia is contagious, or the higher levels of radiation have induced paranoia in your case.
