Is This a Mouse or a Gamepad? It's Both.

Posted December 13, 2010 12:23 PM

From DVICE:

We all want to cut the clutter on our desks. Nowadays, we often find ourselves with too many computer peripherals. Now, you can scratch another one off your list. The Chameleon X-1 is a mouse with a full gamepad underneath.

Just out of interest - how many of us have, need or want a gamepad on our desks?

(I'm a NO on all three).

I'm an avid gamer but not into the type of games that require a game pad. Mouse and keyboard get my Hobbit where he needs to go in Lord of the Rings Online. I used to be a World of Warcraft player which is much more combat driven, the gamepad might have been useful there.

Maybe if they called it a Programable Multitask Input Interface or something like that instead of a gamepad? It is really just a keyboard extension where you can map different functions to it.

I can't release any specific photos, but this is public domain and represents some of the types "gamepads" we produce and own. Obviously, not your ordinary mouse. ;-)

Shouldn't the driver have his hands at ten-to-two on that big steering wheel?

That wouldn't fit on my desk either.

When I was in my flight sim phase of gaming I had an F-14 flight sim that was so detailed and realistic (the controls not the flight) that is wasn't a game anymore. I sunk about 3 dozen of my own aircraft carriers just trying to land the damn thing. I packed it away after my first successful landing.

Now I prefer the role-playing type of game, I'm a huge Tolkien fan so Lord of the Rings is a perfect fit. I spend most of my time in the Shire, planting vegetables, smoking pipeweed and planing my next meal. Us Shirefolk tend to leave hunting orcs and chasing magic rings to you tall people. Its a great form of escapism after a long day at the office.
