Re: Researcher Develops Colour-Changing Fluoride Sensor

From the article:

'Because fluoride is carcinogenic, even at such small doses, a sensor is needed to detect fluoride selectively at very low concentrations and in the presence of other naturally occurring and biologically important ions.'

From http://www.greenfacts.org/en/fluoride/fluorides-2/04-effects-animals.htm#0

4.2 Does fluoride cause cancer in test animals?

A series of studies carried out on various types of rats and mice fed with significant amounts of fluoride for long periods showed no statistically significant increase in the incidence of any tumour. In one study there was a significant trend for bone tumours in male rats only. However, the incidence of these tumours was not greater than what had been observed in previous studies on rats that had not been exposed to fluoride (historical controls).

The statement from the article seems to be clearly untrue. WTF?

Sourav Saha, an assistant professor..

As one professor that I had stated, "I am a professor. I profess to have the truth, but I do not claim that what I teach is the ultimate truth, take the information, do your own research and draw your own conclusions." (or something like that...)

I will agree with your "WTF" and applaud your citing additional information, however.

Congratulations to the research team.

Regardles of their claimed motivations, such a development is very timely for the water supply industry. I really wish that I had such a device right now to allow me to discriminate between groundwater and leaking water supply network, especially as a field test.

Current practice involves sample collection, despatch to a lab with a result in less than 2 days. Meanwhile, a small split in a water main can progress to catastrophic failure.
