Electromagnetic Railgun Launches Fighter Jet for the First Time

Posted December 22, 2010 10:05 AM

From DVICE:

For the first time ever, the US Navy has used a railgun to launch a fighter jet into the air. It may not be ready to launch spacecraft into orbit quite yet, but it's the first real step towards making that happen.

I see a LOT of benefits here.

gentler acceleration does not stress airframes and black out pilots on initial launch.

continuous acceleration instead of slowing as the shuttle reaches the end of travel can reach higher velocity with lower accelerations.

no need for a buffer for the shuttle to run into to stop it. Regenerative braking puts the excess power back into the system.

no live steam to scald anyone. no seals to wear out/replace.

and one thing Carriers have in spades is electrical generating capacity.

Impressive.

You can't tell from the video, but the stroke seems shorter than a steam cat.

I wonder when they started using what looks like an electric holdback instead of the "dogbone"?
