Do We Really Need More Engineers?

Posted January 12, 2011 7:00 AM

A report recently published by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Agency, claims that there is a shortage of engineers worldwide, and that this shortage is hindering efforts in developing countries to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goal of improved access to clean water and sanitation. I normally pay little attention to studies like this, but in this case, I think we should heed the message. What do you think? Is a shortage of engineers making it more difficult for poor countries to improve their living standards? If so, what can be done about it?

What can/could/won't likely be done about it is to upgrade the compensations for positions that could really benefit from better engineering.

A proper classification of engineers based on qualification, field, training and experience etc should be done first. Now we have civil(building, highway, tunnel, dams, structural etc), Mechanical(plumbing,HVAC, automobile, railway etc),Electrical(HV,LV,generators, transformers, switchgears, protection, illumination etc),Electronics(industrial, radio, television, sound etc),marine, building services etc as well as types of work-design,planning, consultancy, estimating, installation, test & commission,R & D ,production, maintenance etc For each type you need a different qualification(degree, diploma, institutional exam, apprenticeship etc) and training. The UN survey should mention the nr of engineers required for each kind of work.
