Solar-Powered 'Smart' Roads Could Zap Snow, Ice

Posted January 19, 2011 9:59 AM

From CNN.com - Technology:

The mayors of New York and Atlanta, Georgia, suffered stinging criticism for their handling of recent winter storms, but in the near future, technology could clear city streets of ice and snow -- by simply melting it away. America's harsh winters cost the nation's economy billions of dollars each year in snow removal equipment, weather damage to streets and vehicles, extra days of school and revenue lost to closed businesses.

Up here in the Dakotas we came up with a similar way of keeping our roads cleaner using solar energy. We made them out of this heavy black stuff that is very wear resistant that naturally collects solar heat energy without complicated electronics or piping.

Its also cheap, recyclable, and easily repaired on the spot too!

We call it pavement.

If someone actually applied some arithmetic to this idea, the results might be more realistic.

Lets see....

$4.4 million per mile times 3 million miles equals $13 trillion.

$10 billion a year is spent on maintenance for winter.

13 trillion divided by 10 billion equals 1300.

So theoretically we would need everything to last for around 1300 years of zero maintenance for a break even on this endeavor. Some how this seems a like a lot more than 6 or so years to me.

Dam practical application of math and reality. Once again it ruins a perfectly good fantasy.

Hey, whats a few trillion we have a new neighbor..borrow somemore. were spending way above our means anyway. Just let the ole boy tag her to the health care bill and make us buy a 2 stroke, plastic, electric car..If they can't afford it take their SS checks $1.00 at a time and deduct a bit from the food program. Poor people can sleep on the heated road and there always road killif you can find some salt or use snow it's white too.
