"Killer Paper" Preserves Food With Silver Nanoparticles

Posted January 21, 2011 9:01 AM

From Fast Company:

The new technique could some day replace methods such as radiation, refrigeration, and heat treatment.Scientists, bless their hearts, have invented something called "killer paper," a material that could be used in food packaging to preserve freshness. What the paper kills is bacteria causing food spoilage, something it achieves through a coating of antibacterial silver nanoparticles.

Out of curiosity, I Googled "inhalation hazards of nanoparticles" I was surprised, not at the fact that these particles can cause harm, but that so little is known.

With every positive, there exists some negatives.

What's also wierd is that they're finding nanomaterials accumulate in small predators. I would not expect that to be an issue!

It's disappointing to see hazards cropping up just because of particle size. I'm used to thinking of silver as a very safe material - and I like it that way.

I was inclined to consider asbestos particle effect on lung tissue and any possible comparison with nanoparticles for toxicity due to inhalation.

Thank you for illustrating other avenues.

Inhaling paper? With or without silver? Is this the twilight zone?

Actually, colloidal silver is an old and safe antibacterial. Some people foolishly drank it, and gained purplish blue skin for their trouble. They lived, the blithering fools.

The antiseptic effect was recognised in ancient times: hence the name "silverware".
