Power Cord Lights Up as Electricity Flows

Posted January 21, 2011 8:40 AM

From CNN.com - Technology:

Here's one of electricity's dirty little secrets: You can't see it moving, so it's hard to know when you're wasting a bunch of it. Think about the "vampire electronics" in your kitchen -- all of those blenders, coffee pots, toasters and toaster ovens that are sucking down power simply because they're plugged into an outlet.

"The charger shuts down completely and the light goes off when the charge is complete, he said."

So (unlike pretty well every other charger or plug-top power supply on the planet) there's nothing drawn from the wall outlet when the device is plugged in but no load is connected?

Also wonder how much power is being wasted lighting up the cord.

I have power cords that have a light on the female end that light to let you know you know its plugged in. I love them. saves a trip to make sure there plugged in when working around the yard with a 100 ft cord or powering a pump ( we collect are rain water) during the summer months...... or if it unplugs or to turn it off/unplug it........

I have the same type of power cords, and I won't buy another 100 foot cord without that feature.

So, the blog subject cord... does it glow brighter with more power flow?

That's a good, practical application of a bit of visual feedback. Prob'ly a teeny little neon, drawing about 1mA.

Would it be more useful to have one every couple of inches along the 100' length? Not IMHO.

A blooming vampirish non sequitur. The idiot light -meant for idiots - shows VOLTAGE present. It definitely does not indicates current or POWER flowing. What kind of twits are the editors there?

Hard to know, when you are wasting a bunch of it.? The excess turns to heat, particularly a "bunch of it", twit.

Now it gets complicated:

you touch it

you feel it

you know it

get it???

Any lamp that glows has to have current running through it.

current (amps) = carrier

volts = work

Volts = Potential (pressure)

Amps = Volume (flow)

Watts = Work (energy)

Over simplified I know.

Guys, if you read the article carefully you will find that the power cord that lights up is in fact an electro-luminescent wire integrated directly into the power cord of a cellphone smart charger product. The electro-luminescent wire is also controlled by what looks like the smart charger (or Apple brand product) electronics as a visual indication of the charging cycle and state.
