How NOT to Keep a Car Running

Posted January 28, 2011 8:30 AM by CarDomain

Two men and a woman blew the roof off their nice Dodge camper van and set themselves on fire by trying to drive while pouring raw fuel into the carburetor using a water bottle and an open bucket.

The van was having a hard time staying running, and the geniuses decided the best course of action would be to remove the engine cover in the passenger compartment and feed gas directly to the motor - while it was running.

Meanwhile, gas fumes were building up dangerously inside the vehicle, and after it stalled and they tried to restart it, they were all blown into the middle of next week. Now listen, I realize it'd be nice to try to refrain from making fun of the victims, but this is outrageous.

They say, "You can't fix stupid", but thermodynamics has now proven that false.

Still I feel a little bad when financial misfortune and desperation lead to peoples personal fate. With time, doctors and medicine are able to cure more physical ailments making it possible for everyone to have an equal chance at life, these sorts of situations could be the new natural selection.

This reminds me of that poor kid who was recently killed falling out of an airplane wheel well trying to hitch a ride. Who would guess that there isn't enough oxygen to stay conscious at 40,000ft, not to mention stay thaw in -60F temperatures? Heck can anyone imagine hanging on in there while taking off? Now his parents are suing the airport for not being secure enough to prevent him from breaking through the parameter fence.

That's not a failure in perimeter security, that's a failure in deductive reasoning.

Amateurs.

They should have used a Windex® bottle to spray it in the carburetor. That works so much better.

I suspect the really sad part of this story is that these two probably think that they are victims here instead of just fools.

They will no doubt sue. After all there is nothing in the operators handbook that says don't do this.

I realize it'd be nice to try to refrain from making fun of the victims, but this is outrageous - they are victims of stupidy and nothing else. AH has it spot on in post #1.

It's a shame that some people are just stupid.

The real sad part, is that I'd be willing to bet that there is some lawyer somewhere, working hard on an angle to make this someone else's fault, and a subsequent lawsuit..........................which will probably be won.

I once did exactly the same thing, successfully in a Dodge van. My main tank ran dry and the valve to the auxiliary failed to function. I had to drain dribbles from my chain saws, welder, and other gear to fill an empty oil container. However, I scrounged hose to connect to the carb, and hung the container from the rear view mirror with string.
