Dubai's Artificial Islands "Sinking"

Posted January 26, 2011 12:58 PM

From Boing Boing:

Dubai's "The World," a collection of artificial islands designed to resemble a map of planet Earth, is reportedly sinking back into the water. From the Telegraph: The islands were intended to be developed with tailor-made hotel complexes and luxury villas, and sold to millionaires. They are off the coast of Dubai and accessible by yacht or motor boat. Now their sands are eroding and the navigational channels between them are silting up, the British lawyer for a company bringing a case against the state-run developer, Nakheel, has told judges.

Yay! Neptune's revenge! Another case of too much money and not enough brains.

The cynic in me has to ask.

Is the model just giving us a preview of what will happen due to climate change?

BTW, the image in the article does not remind me of any particular known portion of the globe. Can anyone clarify where it is?

After reading the indignant, political and class-warfare comments from the OP blog, combined with the idea of building in sand... makes me lose all faith in humanity.

Responses like... good, let the neocon rich bastards die... really..? If you know NOT, don't be ignorant and spread your indignation.

...on a parallel, how is this ANY different than our own blissful ignorance of building (and continuing to build) MAJOR cities on known fault lines. Is that also some neocon, rich bastard plot to rid the world of hundreds of thousands of liberally progressive thinkers when (not IF) the next big quake hits..?

Humanity is SO sad these days...

It doesn't surprise me in the least that this is happening. It's most likely that the manmade islands were improperly constructed and lack adequate erosion control measures to combat the sea waves from washing away the nice pretty sandy beaches. Alot whole lot of "oil money" just going up in smoke!

That, and coupled with short-term and long-term consolidation of the sand atop a saturated sand (or whatever material was used?) subgrade the situation is only going to get much much worse! Who the hell was responsible for this boondoggle engineering-wise in the first place? They surely did not do their "coastal engineering" properly, and most likely didn't untake any erosion studies and as well as conducting exhaustive computer modeling.

Good call by pervious poster on the possibility of rising sea and ocean levels due to "Climate Warning".

all manmade structures require maintenance. nobody wins against entropy.

That's a bumper sticker I've wanted for a while:

Entropy Happens

yes, work is good.. but busy and long... 97 hours last pay period... plus more offline time on the weekend.. it is certainly engaging and interesting...

as for entropy... it is entropy that gives us energy. From nuclear decay, to flowing water, to any 'path of least resistance' thing.. Entropy does happen, and we exist as a result. (although we need maintenance too... Honey... get me another beer while you are up, pleeease!!!)

cheers,

Chris

Well, it looks like I will have to rethink my plan to get a big ship and haul dirt from Texas to Japan to make more land there.
