London to send satellite into space

Posted March 26, 2007 5:20 PM

From PhysOrg.com - latest science and technology news:

London is planning to invest in sending a satellite into space to cut out the need for mobile phone masts and possibly monitor motorists from space, local authorities confirmed Monday. "The satellite, due to be launched in 2011, would have the capacity to handle mobile and Internet communications -- but worryingly for motorists around the country, could be used to monitor drivers from space," he said.

There's certainly no lack of astonishment on my part why societies allow their governments to pull off crap like this. Britain's and the United States' push to monitor its citizens ever more and more closely amounts to nothing less than paving the road to tyranny.

Wake up!!!!!!!

"Red Ken" is the nickname of Ken Livingston, the Mayor of London.

Yes, and you have to like the guy, just for the enemies he makes.

I would have preferred it if he would not have reconciled with New Labour - or at least not immediately after he was elected.

That leaves a lot of people thinking it was just a N.L. scam to trounce the opposition.

I agree, especially as Blair screwed him more or less straight away over the underground.

The rarified air of the tenuous Martian atmosphere has left Guest (Post #2) a bit giddy, perhaps?

Maybe the reason for this is that the London Congestion Charge has been difficult to collect - Lothian Buses had the audacity to complain when they were charged for violation as their BUS was driven round the Edinburgh bypass!

With a satellite, just think how many more can be caught (they need to make this system profitable somehow).

There are Scottish elections in May - I won't be voting Labour. (nuff said?)

Yes, most people care, but the guv.com has been very slippery with this thing. The PM's office had a petition posted on the web site asking people their opinion about road charging, and then said there were no plans to put it into effect when they received over a million signers saying no. Everybody knows they want to put it into effect. Considering the general apathy you get with these things, a million is incredible.

The incomprehensible bit is that road charging already happens. The more road fuel one consumes, the more tax one pays. The London congestion charging zone makes the taxation gradient steeper towards the centre of this major city.

Were the funds to go to central funding to provide public services, then fine, subject to one's political preferences. The problem is that it is pushing people onto the now-"privatised" public transport services, thereby lining the pockets of the shareholders of any company on the private side of the private/public partnership arrangements.

"Nice work if you can get it, and you can get it if you try..."

As a British citizen I place my faith in our government's proven record of gross incompetence in making any technology based system work. They have a track record of abandoned high tech systems & I've no reason to suspect that they will do any better with this one.

I'm gladdened to see I'm not the only cynic here. I was just wondering who in the gov.com was reading this?

well they always find something to waste money on instead of sorting out our disintergrating roads/paths/nhs etc, etc. everyone in the country should send a letter to No 10 and tell them that they are all sacked after all we the people are their employers
