Oxford University researchers have created a new "biofuel cell" that generates electricity from ordinary air spiked with small amounts of hydrogen.
The cell created by Dr. Fraser Armstrong and his team is not a large-scale power generator: the prototype currently produces enough power to run a wristwatch and it runs for about two days. Armstrong predicted advanced versions could power sources for low-consumption electronics.
As well, if and when it becomes commercially viable, the biofuel cell would have several advantages over existing fuel-cell technologies, including that it would cost much less to produce and less likely to break down around carbon monoxide.
"The technology is immensely developable," said Armstrong, who presented the research Tuesday at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Chicago.
