Retailer Supports Sustainable Fisheries

Posted February 14, 2011 7:00 AM

Canada's second largest supermarket retailer has publicly committed to sustainable fishing and farming practices, ensuring the long-term health of both the ocean and fisheries. The strategies include participating in certification programs, providing education for consumers about threatened species, and de-listing those varieties of fish for consumption. Will the collaboration of retailers and suppliers help sustain the future of seafood? What work can the consuming public do to encourage the proper use of these foods? What role should regulations play in the process?

I would suggest you look at what we have done here in Alaska. From quotas to science to marketing it seems to work. Our stocks are holding up well, our fisheries are safer and of course our products are superb. ( no bias of course )

Kudos to Sobey's for this stance. Whatever else one might think about Wal-Mart, they too have spearheaded some similar initiatives, as have some individual cities. A few big markets can get the ball rolling on good ideas, using market incentives rather than coercive regulations. Public awareness can also help.

Despite some learning-curve issues such as the king-crab fishery in the early 1980s, Alaska has done mostly a good job in regulating fisheries so as to promote sustained (if moderate) harvestability. The more that is known, the better this can get.
