Making Waves with the Manta Amphibious Three-Wheeler Concept

Posted March 01, 2011 1:57 PM

From Gizmag:

Although I live by a river, I don't own a boat so am not faced with having to drag a trailer down to the water's edge and unload my dinghy every time I want to cross the great expanse. I might just be persuaded to spend more time on the water, though, if there was something like the Manta waiting outside my front door. The sporty-looking three-wheeler concept is designed to be run on twin electric motors, with the rear wheels taking care of propulsion on water as well as on the road. The design is amongst the entries chosen by this year's Michelin Challenge Design judges for display at a recent auto show.

Dear Inventors,

Thank you for your recent submission. The concept is unique and visionary. However almost since the wheel was first invented there have been many exceptional thinkers who have devised amphibious vehicles. We regret to inform you that all have met with very little success in the long run. This can be attributed to the fact that consumers don't actually want one. Please make a note of this.

Best wishes,

The Public.

Nice job, though I'd prefer a separate propulsion system to the road wheels. It would make it a tad more efficient on the water than relying on the rear wheels paddling about.

Amphibious cars are cursed by not being one or other. Usually they're only just functional as a car and as for being a boat? Well they float and will make some headway except into a stiff breeze. Except maybe for the Rinspeed.....

As for desirability? Yes sign me up! The thought of traversing 15km across Lake Macquarie rather than 45km around it everyday has merit. Especially as it avoids all the state sponsored pratfalls in the process. Now if I can drop some crab traps on the way and pick them up on the way home as well getting some fishing in too well that can only be Win Win Win!

Of course amphibious vehicles only makes sense if you live by the water, like do.. As for the poor busted arse ghetto dweller that "guest" appears to be, sucks to be you...

Did you check out the link? The rear wheels turn through 90° in the water, and look like they make pretty good props.
