The Vanishing PC

Posted March 05, 2011 7:00 AM

We've heard the forecasts — and witnessed the possible inception of the trend — the PC as we know it is vanishing. Or, is it? Steve Jobs and Steve Ballmer marketplace jabbering notwithstanding, it's tool users who hold the answer. Will professionals who need serious computing power, storage and display capabilities rely more and more on smaller devices like iPads. Will we continue growing the number of gadgets or move toward a universal platform?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Mechanical Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Mechanical Components today.

"the PC as we know it is vanishing"

I didn't get that memo. When did this happen. The people at Tiger, Dell and HP continue to bombard me with advertisements for PCs. Someone better hurry up and tell them so they won't waste so much of their advertising budgets trying to sell PCs.

By the way, the offices are paperless. They announced it about 20 years ago. Did anyone notice?

The trend I see is larger and larger LCD screens with higher and higher resolutions...It is hard to believe that a smart phone is going to be able to handle the graphics load for such...

Well I'm very interested in the Motorola Atrix 4G cell phone. Dual 1Ghz processors - even has an option to come with its laptop docking for traditional-style useage as composing detailed emails and other document editing on a phone screen is challenging when compared against a laptop format. If/when I get one, it will be faster than the three older computers we currently have in our house! With digital photos and video and ever increasing document storage, the desktop PC may go but I still see the need for some sort of domestic server station most likely affiliated with the Audio/Video/Entertainment area of the home. As for me with the powerful CAD and Flight Sim gaming - It will be a while before I step away from a PC unit for those reasons right there.
