Any vehicle owner knows that the price you pay initially is
only part of the overall cost of ownership, as it doesn't include additional
costs for registration fees and maintenance costs. That is, until now, if you believe what Ford
is saying about its upcoming electric vehicle, the Focus Electric.
Ford is marketing the Focus Electric as a way to save an
estimated $1171 in maintenance costs. They've released a list of 25 items that
will never require replacement for maintenance for the first 150,000 miles. The
list includes: the alternator, battery, clutch, filters, fluids, and belts. See
the full
list at AutoGuide.
No price point has been announced for the Ford Focus
Electric yet, but the estimated savings of $1171 will help cover the cost of
the "fast-charging home system," which will be sold separately for about $1499.
As Tim Beissmann from Car Advice points out, Ford overlooks
the most important cost in vehicle ownership: the cost of fuel. Do you think
the savings that Ford is touting will be enough to sell people on their electric
vehicle?
