Using Space Bacteria For Earthling Cures

Posted March 22, 2011 8:53 AM

From Tech News Watch:

What can you do when you've got a case of the Martian barnacles? Venusian whooping sneeze? Van Allen below-the-belt snickerbumps? The Callisto flockheart? Get NASA on the horn before your foot swells to the size of a Neptunian varp poodle (they're very large)! Astronauts have been studying the effects of space travel on Pseudomonas aeruginosa (the cooties that made Fred Haise ill during 1970's Apollo 13 mission) and Salmonella typhimurium in hopes of finding out what makes them tick in this particular environment. Space bacteria is a scary thought, right?

Earth bound microorganisms responding differently in micro environments is an interesting concept. If these earth bound microbes can react different in space, then I am guessing that if we encounter alien bacteria in micro environments and return them to earth they will undergo mutations and behave different than their insitu environment. Another question would be can space travel force common earth microbes to mutate as they re-enter the earth's gravity. That is likely but will they then be virulent. It is scary if they exist. The bacteria will likely adapt to earth and create havoc similar to the first Europeans introducing the measles or flu to the new world in 1492+. I would like to see more of these type of experiments with the known bacteria and other parasites.

We have yet to encounter viable alien bacteria so I won't hold my breath and worry about that aspect yet.

Hi kevinm, No we havn't encounterd alien bacteria yet, but if or when we do they are likely to be deadly to us on earth, so if a spaceship is returning from say Neptune, it would be advisable to place both the landing craft and the astronauts in quarantine as soon as they land on earth!
