Ethanol Blamed for Record Food Prices

The article gives a very concise and accurate description of the problem with using food crops for energy production. That is why Infinite Renewable Energy, Inc. has developed a cellulose process that uses non-food crops and waste vegetation to make ethanol. That $7.00 per bushel quote for the price of corn means that the corn ethanol producer has a $2.50 per gallon cost for feedstock.

By contrast, the cellulosic process can use several low-inut non-food crops that will yield 5,000 gallons of ethanol per acre per year, lettiing the grower earn $2,000/acre (gross return) while keeping the feedstock cost to the producer at 40 cents per gallon. And that cost can be further reduced by supplementing the growers' crops with nuisance or waste vegetation normally landfilled, and charging a reduced tipping fee to receive it. Once Infinite Renewable Energy has the sugar solution, the rest of the process is the same as the corn process.

The basic difference is that the corn process makes fermentable sugar from starch, while the cellulose process makes fermentable sugar from the total plant polysaccharides.
