Using Heat to Cool Buildings

Posted March 30, 2011 9:03 AM

From Technology Review RSS Feeds:

It could soon be more practical to cool buildings using solar water heaters and waste heat from generators. That's because of new porous materials developed by researchers from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. These materials can improve a process called adsorption chilling, which can be used for refrigeration and air conditioning.

I thought this was called absorption refrigeration, rather than adsorption, but maybe this is a new animal.

I had to look it up too: How adsorption technology works, compliments of Wiki.

There are several confusions in this article. One of them is that it is absorption refrigeration being described, rather than adsorption.

I usually confuse pretty easily.

As I read it, the article is more of a comparison between mechanically compressed refrigerant and the adsorption process to condense the refrigerant.

I agree absorption is discussed (only mentioned once), but that is how heat is moved.
